Community Foundation of Tompkins County announces Howland Foundation Grants

ITHACA , NY July 5 - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Community Foundation of Tompkins County is pleased to announce the 2006 Helen Thomas Howland Foundation grants to benefit Tompkins and Broome counties. As administrative agent for the Howland Foundation, the Community Foundation of Tompkins County reviews all applications and makes funding recommendations to the Howland Foundation trustees. The Howland Foundation supports grants in aging, youth, animal welfare, and the environment. Grants are limited to qualified nonprofit organizations that provide substantial benefit to these areas.

The 2006 Howland Foundation grant recipient for aging services is the Beechtree Center , the former Reconstruction Home, for its Mary Hibbard Rehabilitation Wing. The 2006 grant recipients for youth services are the Greater Ithaca Activities Center for the Friday Night Youth Program, Vitamin L Project for the Sliding Scale Scholarship program, Temunchin Skate Fund for the Ithaca Skate Park Renovation, and the Village Camp Fund for the Earth Connections program. The 2006 grant recipient for animal welfare is the Broome County Humane Society for the Restoring the Dream project. The 2006 grant recipient for environmental programming is Cayuga Nature Center for the Cayuga Waterways project.

The Foundation was particularly pleased to be able to award a number of grants which covered multiple priority areas. The 2006 grant recipient for aging services and animal welfare is Binghamton University , Decker School of Nursing for the Pet Net program. The 2006 grant recipients for youth services and environmental programming are Community Science Institute for Watershed Youth Partnerships and Ithaca Children's Garden for a footbridge.

All grants will be presented at a special awards ceremony 9am on July 13 th 2006 at The History Center in Tompkins County , located in Downtown Ithaca.
