Our History

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it's th only thing that ever has." Margaret MeadIn early 1999 a group of concerned citizens gathered to discuss ways of creating a community foundation to serve as the philanthropic center for Tompkins County and for those wishing to support and enhance the quality of life for all who live and work here. In June 2000 six people were appointed to serve as the Incorporating Board of the new Community Foundation of Tompkins County, a 501©(3) nonprofit public foundation. The six were Jeff Furman, Howard P. Hartnett, Bill Myers, John Semmler, Diane Shafer, and Robert Swieringa.

By August 2000 the Foundation became a reality. Nominations for the Board were gathered throughout the community. In September 2000 twenty-two people were selected to serve as the Founding Board of the Community Foundation, people distinguished by their diversity of community involvement and awareness as well as , their commitment to locally-focused philanthropy. The Founding Board were: Penny Boynton, Michael C. Cannon, Eric Clay, Fernando de Aragon, Francille Firebaugh, Matthew Green, Janet Hawkes, Peg Hendricks, John Moss Hinchcliff, Mary Beth Holub, John A. Krout, Eric Lerner, Ken McClane, Jake Ryan, Vilma Santiago-Irizarry, Helen Saunders, Neal Stamp*, Carol Terrizzi, Sally True, Gene Yarussi; Margaret A. Hendricks, First Chair; Jeffrey True, Founding Executive Director. *denotes deceased member
